Does this replace our existing SEO?

No. GEO is genuinely additive. Traditional SEO still drives the larger share of search traffic for most UK SMEs in 2026, and it’ll keep doing so for some time. The point of GEO is that there’s a second, faster-growing channel (AI search referrals) running in parallel, and most SMEs are completely invisible on it. Keep your existing SEO supplier. Add GEO. They are different jobs.

How do you actually measure citations in ChatGPT? It changes every query.

Citations are sampled, not exhaustive. We run the same set of monitored queries (20–100 depending on tier) on a monthly cadence across multiple sessions and aggregate the results. The pattern is statistically meaningful even though any single query response is variable. You’ll see citation share trend over time rather than absolute numbers — which is the honest answer about what AI search actually is.

Will this hurt our Google rankings?

No — in fact the opposite. The same structural choices that make content AI-citable (clean FAQs, schema markup, definition paragraphs near the top of pages, quote-ready statements) also make it more Google-ranking-friendly. Both engines are converging on the same content shape. We’ve never seen a GEO engagement that wasn’t also a small uplift to traditional SERP performance.

Is this only useful for content-heavy businesses?

It’s most useful for businesses where prospects ask AI questions like “who’s the best [trade] in [town]?” or “what does [service] in [region] usually cost?” or “recommend a [type of business] for [need].” That covers most of the trades, hospitality, professional-services and retail-adjacent businesses we work with. If your buyers don’t ask AI anything before they buy, GEO probably isn’t the right add-on yet — come back in 12 months.

Does this work for local businesses?

Yes — arguably better. Local queries (“recommend a sweep in Lincolnshire”) have far less competition for AI citation than national or generic queries. A well-structured local business page can become the canonical AI-cited answer for its niche surprisingly quickly. Our own Bourne-anchored portfolio sites are deliberately built this way.
